Need some help understanding how controls work? Check out our Fountain Controls Guide

Splash Pads and Dancing Fountains are becoming very popular items in the aquatic industry.  One of the primary differences between these projects and standard swimming pools or spraying fountains is the controls.  This Design Guide will help you better understand how these advanced controls fit with different fountain designs and help you choose the one that will work best for your project.  We’ve also included some tips and ideas to make your Splash Pad or Dancing Fountain a big success.

For those who are new to these types of fountains, and even those who’ve worked with them many times before, there are questions that come up like, “How do I manage pressure in my system so when only one nozzle is on it doesn’t spray 20ft in the air while when a group of them are on they only spray 6 inches high?”, “How do I choose the right valves to get the effect I want without spending too much money?”, “What if my customer wants one splash pad feature with a 24 VAC solenoid valve in it and another feature with a 25 VDC solenoid valve?”, “Can I control more than one pump with the same controller?”, and so on.

Trust us when we say, understanding these water feature controls isn’t as bad as you might think.  Spend a little time with our Design Guide and we’ll get you well on your way to a successful splash pad or dancing fountain project!  Need a little extra guidance?  Contact our Salt Lake City Utah team of water feature experts.

There are many different ways to successfully lay out a splash pad or dancing fountain system.  The following are 4 general categories for these systems that are helpful to understand: Pass-Through, Single Pump, Feature Pump with Circulation, and Interactive-Sensor Controlled.

Pass Through

How it works

Water supply comes from a culinary waterline, irrigation line, or branch from a pool system pump.  Feature valves are switched on/off by the Splash Wizard controls.  Water sprays through nozzles in patterns and then drains into a sewer system, is used for irrigation, or drains back into a pool.

Where to use it

Residential splash pads, Decorative dancing fountain where drainage is used for irrigation.

Single Pump

How it works

A self-contained system where a single pump draws water from a holding tank and pumps it out through valves to the nozzles.  Water is collected in a drain system and recycled back into the tank.  Where desired, water can be pumped through a filtration system as it’s headed to the valves to clean out both

Feature Pump with Circulation

How it works

A circulation pump draws water from the holding tank, circulates it through a filtration system, and returns the water to the tank.  A feature pump(s) draw water from the tank and pumps it through the nozzles.  Water drains back into the tank.  Nozzle spray and circulation/filtration systems are separate but integrated.

Interactive-Sensor Controls

How it works

These water features can have all of the same basics as the Feature Pump with Circulation types but they also use sensors to automate some special features.  This includes sensor inputs like wind speed cut-off, push-button activation (with a timer), control room flood sensor, water tank high water fill and low cut off level sensors.
